Drawing from life each day was one of the highlights of my travels through Asia.

In Mumbai airport food lounge was a little tricky because it is a place where people come and go very quickly. I opted for a composite study over a few hours, without worrying if the people were in the right place or even at the right scale. It was more about looking and drawing than accuracy.

In Goa I started to develop more of a comic book layout. I like the way the stories and drawings start to intertwine. The three people (below) sitting around the table were members of the same family, but I drew Lucy the day after I drew her parents, and they were sat at different tables.

I usually draw quite quickly. I find I like my sketches more when they have a looser, more expressive feel and are less technically accurate. I always draw until I smile to myself. Only then do I know that the drawing is finished.

I was surprised and impressed by how much my drawing improved simply by committing to drawing each day, no matter what they looked like or how long they took me. It didn’t matter what I drew, as long as it was drawn from life, rather than a photo. Which is why, depending on how tired I am or how busy the day has been, sometimes I end up drawing the contents of my dressing table or suitcase.
