I soon learnt, from repeated experience, that NEMP competition judges don’t seem to really appreciate Architectural photographs. Yet these are some of my absolute favourite photographs. They rarely scored highly and I never really understood why. I think they are beautiful.

Birmingham Library Facade

I love this photo! If I had to choose, I would say it is one of my top three of all time, possibly my favourite. It is taken looking upwards, with my camera pointing to the sky, but positioned between the glass wall and the fret work on the outside of the new library in Birmingham. A lot of people think I took it standing in a room with a reflective floor. I just adore images which take some time to fully understand.

The Art of Architecture

‘The Art of Architecture’ was taken on a Field Study Trip to Paris in 2017. It was one of the first photos I submitted for competition at the club and my first architectural photo. I think it glows with the light of the yellow columns which run the length of the sub level of the then recently opened Louis Vuitton Museum. I love the rhythm of the columns gliding and glowing behind these huge structural verticals supporting the beautiful sails which encase the building above. The play of the light and dark with the limited colour palette, really appeals to me.

Dining with the Fishes

Not officially Architecture but I saw this dining table setup submerged in the Droog Design Showroom fishtank in Amsterdam in 2015 and loved it. It’s so imaginative and off the wall.
